Our friends over at Segment recently came to us with a great idea: they wanted to get a bunch of analysts together to help a non-profit find insights in their data.
Watsi, a healthcare startup that's done an incredible job of building a donor community that supports healthcare for patients around the world, generously opened up their data to us. As we started collaborating with their team, we learned that they were looking to expand their community, patient support, and reach even further. They needed a repeatable model for increasing donations. They needed an engine.

When we launched Mode's public beta in June 2014, we knew we were putting an MVP (minimum viable product) editor into the wild. As soon as we released it, we started thinking about how we could make it even easier for analysts to create and share work. But, the beta gave us something we couldn't get otherwise: usage data. Conventional wisdom says that it’s best to issue press releases in the middle of the week: the press is more active and readers more engaged. I was recently involved in one such announcement. We went with tradition and announced our public beta and funding on a Tuesday—only to run right into Facebook’s launch of Slingshot. In the months since, I haven’t stopped wondering: Could Friday’s smaller audiences actually present a better opportunity for young startups?
